An introduction to Gaara

The creator of the character Gaara was to highlight Naruto. He gave him a past like Naruto, rejected by everyone and abandoned.  Gaara evolves from a lonely child into a distant and sarcastic character, possibly to appeal to readers’ sympathy, as this character is completely different from Naruto, being abandoned, but still always happy.  Gaara was the third and youngest child of the Fourth Kazekage and Karura. He is also the younger brother of Temari and Kankuro. Before Gaara was born, his father ordered Chiyo to seal Shukaku into his body, in the hopes of making him the ultimate weapon of the Sand Village. Another reason is because of the Kazekage’s three children, only Gaara is compatible with the One-Tails. Gaara was born prematurely, so when he was born, he looked small and weak. Before she died, Karura hugged her son and vowed to protect him forever. Gaara trained in jutsu by her father. But Gaara’s uncle, Yashamaru, was the one who raised Gaara. The Sand villagers hate and fear Gaara for Shukaku’s strength. They could only see the monster inside him. For a long time, Yashamaru seemed to be the only one who cared about Gaara. When Gaara accidentally used the One-Tails’ power to injure others, only Yashamaru understood that he didn’t want to hurt everyone. However, the Sand Village Council was based on Gaara’s unintentional attacks on others to conclude he was a threat to the village. Because of the danger hidden in Gaara and also because he was disappointed with what’s going on, the Fourth Kazekage sent Yashamaru to attack him both physically and mentally to check if he could control Shukaku.  Obeying him, Yashamaru told Gaara that his mother had never loved him. He also tried to assassinate Gaara but was mortally wounded by the boy, before he realized he had just killed anyone.

In an interview, Kishimoto said that he originally intended to give Gaara the name “Kotaro Fuma” when the editor advised him to call the character Gaara. After learning the idea that the name Gaara was taken after the name of a ski resort in Japan, the author felt ridiculous. Luckily our author changed his mind and named the character as the editor’s advice. But he was determined to put it on the name he originally thought of, the guy who looks clearly cold, cool, has a cute name that doesn’t match at all. Therefore, Kishimoto’s editor has been instrumental in creating an iconic name like Gaara.
